Our in-depth review of the Coordinated Donor Support to the South African vaccination programme was conducted in the first half of 2023. Commissioned by the DG Murray Trust, I led a team – consisting of my myself and my old Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation colleagues Rory Liedeman and Anthony Muteti – in reviewing numerous documents and interviewing almost 60 individuals involved with the initiative.

It was quite a task, especially to schedule interviews with some of the top government technicrats involved in the initiative. But we managed, and you can find the main report on my work page. This report is obviously very detailed, so I subsequently published an Opinion piece in the Daily Maverick, which sets out the lessons learnt from the initiative: What South Africa’s Covid-19 vaccination rollout teaches us about addressing our challenges. One of the interesting things we discovered was that the Covid-19 vaccine collaboration approach built an innovative platform which can be used again to try and address South Africa's other challenges. We wanted to share this positive finding, and, happily, John Maytham of CapeTalk interviewed me on his Afternoon Drive show about it.
